One of the leading lights of a new generation of female conductors, Norwegian Tabita Berglund launches this concert with Mozart’s vivacious overture to his most popular opera. She’s joined by versatile French-German virtuoso, Nicolas Altstaedt, for arguably the world’s best-loved cello concerto. Steeped in autumnal colours, Elgar’s last major orchestral work is a heartfelt farewell to a world blown apart by the First World War. The mood is distinctly more upbeat in Sibelius’ 2nd Symphony, the most overtly Romantic of his output. A trip to Italy provided the initial inspiration and there’s more than a tinge of its sunny climate amongst the Symphony’s craggier Finnish elements, not least in its majestic finale.
