Capital City Jazz Orchestra with special guest soloist Nikki Iles

  • Level 3 Lounge

The Capital City Jazz Orchestra was formed in 2007 and features some of the finest Jazz musicians in South Wales. They play regularly at Jazz Clubs across Wales and have performed at the Brecon Jazz Festival and Swansea International Jazz Festival. In the last 10 years they have worked with a host of international Jazz artists including Clare Teal, Matt Ford, Lee Gibson, Claire Martin, Alan Barnes, Mark Nightingale, Dave O' Higgins, Bruce Adams, Nigel Hitchcock and Bobby Shew.

Joining the CCJO on stage is award winning jazz pianist and composer Nikki Iles. Nikki was a founder member of the innovative Creative Jazz Orchestra – working with Anthony Braxton, Mike Gibbs, Vince Mendoza and Mark-Anthony Turnage. Although well known as a pianist, composition remains a major part of her musical life with commissions from The London Sinfonietta, The London Philharmonic’s Renga and The National Youth Jazz Orchestra (featured at the Proms).

“A formidable UK jazz presence rising to her full height.”
“Iles is one of the most refreshing figures to have emerged in the UK scene in recent times, with a liquid sound and supple, obliquely resolved phrasing as an improviser”.
“Formidably creative....
"Iles displayed the rhythmic surprises, shape shifting phrases, playful dialogue with a mix of ruggedness and reflection that make her comparable with the great John Taylor."

"Nikki Iles is a pianist of extraordinary imagination who thrives on fugitive melodies”
