 Conductor   Jamie Phillips
 Soloist  Clare Hammond, Piano
   Cardiff Ardwyn Singers
Sibelius  At the Castle Gate, from Pelleas et Melisande   3.30'
Williams  Suite from Close Encounters of the Third Kind     10'
 Connesson   The Shining One     9'
 Holst  The Planets   52'

This spectacular concert from The Philharmonia takes us on an eye-popping tour through space, with the massive sounds of the orchestra matched by stunning moving images from the National Space Centre. The journey starts with the music of Sibelius (the theme to The Sky at Night) and a voyage from earth out into the Milky Way, the vast array of stars projected above the stage. There's movie magic to follow, courtesy of John Williams' brilliant score to Close Encounters of the Third Kind, complete with images from the film. Guillaume Connesson's luminous orchestral showpiece, The Shining One, features the brilliant young pianist Clare Hammond against a blazing backdrop of images of the sun, and sets the scene for Gustav Holst's timeless masterpiece, The Planets. A glorious showpiece for enormous orchestra, this vivid depiction of the solar system, and the mythical gods associated with it, is a huge favourite with audiences everywhere. And it'll be even more dazzling this time, with amazing CGI images of the planets taking us from the ferocious energy of Mars, the Bringer of War to the visionary chill of Neptune, The Mystic.

Visuals produced and supported by NSC Creative, National Space Centre and RAS200.
