The Strasbourg Philharmonic’s first visit to Cardiff brings an exciting Franco-Russian programme with a superstar soloist. Nikolai Lugansky has been described as ‘one of the most outstanding artists of our epoch’ and his performances of Rachmaninov in particular are a thing of wonder, so hearing him perform the composer’s epic 2nd Piano Concerto is an irresistible prospect. The rest of the programme brings carnivalesque excitement from Hector Berlioz and more sinister thrills from César Franck’s cautionary tale of The Accursed Huntsman. Balletic delights from Ravel – his gorgeous suite from
Mother Goose and his whirling vision of a decadent Vienna waltzing itself into oblivion – complete a concert that’s gleaming with French polish.
