Britten’s atmospheric sea portraits serve as visceral evocations and carefully drawn emotional states within his operatic masterpiece. Melodic charm pervades Dvořák’s prayerful song collection from 1894, while a heady sensuality and physical longing saturate the Prelude and Liebestod from Wagner’s opera first performed in Munich in 1865 and based on an ill-fated 12th century romance. Janáček’s theatrical instincts come to the fore in the blazing fanfares of his vividly scored Sinfonietta, its striking sound world concluding a thrilling evening.
