Czech maestro Tomáš Hanus will surely be the ideal guide for Smetana’s sparkling musical portraits of his beloved Bohemia enshrined in six symphonic poems known as Má vlast or ‘My Homeland’. Seldom performed in its entirety, this is a wonderful chance to hear a rich-hued work that established the composer’s reputation as the father of Czech music. Its Prague premiere in 1882 provoked scenes of patriotic fervour with a ‘storm of unending applause …repeated after each of the six parts’.
