The first of Schumann’s four symphonies is one of his most exuberant works, brimming with vitality and boundless optimism. Sketched in just four days in January 1841, it was inspired by his recent discovery of Schubert’s 9th symphony. Schumann’s work is partnered by one of the finest of all 20th-century violin concertos, written when Elgar was at the height of his creative powers.
