Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 2

|Martin James Bartlett||Piano|
|Shostakovich||Piano Concerto No. 2|
|Mahler||Symphony No. 1|
The season closes with the lighter side of Shostakovich and Mahler, expressing both youthful energy and awe at the wonders of nature.
Shostakovich’s swift and purposeful second piano concerto seems perfectly suited to the promising talents of his son, Maxim, as well as showcasing great melodic craft in the beautiful central movement. The Austrian forests and Alps, with their beauty and folklore, were a deep fund of inspiration for Mahler throughout his life. This symphony is his first, typically ambitious, step in celebrating their spell-like hold.
Please note that all BBC NOW concerts are recorded live for BBC Radio broadcast. Patrons are encouraged to bring along children and take advantage of Family Tickets, but please be aware that any noise can be picked up on the broadcast. No content is unsuitable for children, but there may be extended periods of loud music. BBC NOW concerts are generally suitable for ages 7+, but parents will be the best judge of whether their children are able to sit quietly for a long time. We would also advise taking an aisle seat so they can exit easily if needed.
