BBC Cardiff Singer of the World is a life-changing experience for twenty young singers at the start of their professional careers. Over four hundred gifted singers applied from all over the world, and the final twenty have made it through a rigorous selection process. Now they get to perform in front of our distinguished jury. They will be accompanied by two world-class orchestras – the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, conducted by Ewa Strusińska, and the WNO Orchestra conducted by Ariane Matiakh. The performances are broadcast across the BBC to audiences around the UK and beyond, and the five strongest singers are selected to compete in the exhilarating final at St David’s Hall. The singer named BBC Cardiff Singer of the World, is presented with the Cardiff Trophy and £20,000.

The Audience Prize

The Audience Prize is voted by our audiences, and presented during the grand final. Winners receive The Dame Joan Sutherland Audience Prize, £2,500 and a crystal trophy. This year the prize is dedicated to the memory of Dmitri Hvorostovsky, the much missed and beloved baritone who became Cardiff Singer of the World in 1989. Dame Joan Sutherland was patron of the competition for many years and a huge supporter of Dmitri, so it is fitting that her husband, Richard Bonynge, has agreed to present the audience Prize Trophy this year in his wife’s name.

Pre-Concert Talk with Donald Maxwell

Over the course of the competition week ticket-holders can join our popular free talks to hear insights into the music being performed. Taking place at the venue 45 minutes prior to each round and final.

Fringe Events

In 2019, we are again organising our series of fringe events throughout the week, and you can enjoy a wider range of events than ever across Cardiff and beyond.
