Happy New Year from St David’s Hall!
IT’S 2019 already and although the Christmas and New Year festivities are over, there’s plenty to fend off the January blues at St David’s Hall!
You may be back to work now, but the action-packed programme at the Hall is soon back to normal starting with Beyond the Barricade (Sat 5 Jan). Now celebrating its 20th anniversary, the hit show recreates the best of Broadway and the West End culminating in a stunning finale from Les Misérables.
As usual there’s a healthy helping of high quality classical music too. The International Concert Series continues with the Welsh National Opera Orchestra (Sun 27 Jan) accompanied by virtuoso violinist, Alexander Sitkovetsky. Also returning are the BBC National Orchestra & Chorus of Wales (Fri 18 Jan) as acclaimed pianist Stephen Hough plays Beethoven. Our Lunchtime Concerts resume with the Sir Elton John Scholarship awardee Isata Kanneh-Mason (Tues 22 Jan) and charismatic classical guitarist Sean Shibe (Tues 29 Jan).
Plus, if you’re a fan of both ‘The King of Rock’n’Roll’ and classical music, you’ll love Classic Elvis (Sat 19 Jan) as top tributes Ciarán Houlihan and Michael Glaysher join forces with Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra. This spectacular show features amazing orchestral arrangements of Elvis songs from the early Sun Studio recordings and into the movie years before an epic finale in Las Vegas.
As well as The King of Rock’n’Roll, there’s also The King of Pop with Michael Starring Ben - The Magic of Michael Jackson (Sat 12 Jan) featuring all the huge hits like Thriller, Billie Jeanand Man in the Mirror. The terrific tributes don’t stop there either. Johnny Cash Roadshow (Sat 26 Jan) is back by popular demand to celebrate 50 years of the seminal At San Quentinalbum. Furthermore, Luther (Fri 25 Jan) relives the ‘Velvet Voice’ of the late, great LutherVandross, whilst Back to Bacharach (Sun 20 Jan) revels in the incredible body of work ofone of the world’s most revered songwriters, Burt Bacharach. Yet, if you prefer your music withthe amps cranked up to 11 then The Classic Rock Show: Guitar Greats (Weds 23 Jan) isright up your street! Get ready for a night packed full of relentless riffs and soaring solos fromAC/DC to ZZ Top!
Folk fans are in for a double treat in the Roots Unearthed season too. Icons Martin Carthy & John Kirkpatrick (Tues 15 Jan) share the stage for an unmissable evening, and the “Welsh Springsteen” Martyn Joseph (Tues 29 Jan) is back with his magnificent mix of melody andsocial commentary. Also appearing the L3 Lounge is Cardiff’s own Capital City Jazz Orchestra (Tues 22 Jan) with a helping hand from esteemed trumpeter Mike Lovatt.
Great British Bake Off presenter and beloved comedian, Sandi Toksvig (Thurs 24 Jan) returns to stand-up with her hilarious new show National Trevor. There’s also laughs to be had in the ghoulishly gruesome Circus of Horrors (Fri 11 Jan), and if you’re still after something a bit different why not try the nation’s favourite medium Psychic Sally (Thurs 31 Jan) on her 10th anniversary tour?
