Composers of the First World War: A Commemoration
Friday 19 October 2018, 7.30pm

The much anticipated new season starts with Composers of the First World War: A Commemoration (Friday 19 October 2018) featuring Butterworth’s On Banks of Green Willow, Vaughan Williams’ Symphony No 5 and Sir Arthur Bliss’ suite from the film Things to Come. All three composers saw service during the so-called ‘war to end all wars’, and 2018 marks the centenary of the end of the conflict. The programme also includes Keep the Home Fires Burning and We’ll Gather Lilacs by Ivor Novello, and Tunes from the Trenches – a selection of popular, patriotic songs sung by the British and American troops. This concert also includes a powerful performance from sensational Welsh soprano, Ros Evans.

A Night at the Movies – Friday 7 December 2018, 7.30pm

After a sell-out packed to the rafters last year, A Night at the Movies (Friday 7 December 2018) returns for another night of glitz and glamour with all the movie magic of Hollywood. Get ready for a rollercoaster ride down the red carpet with family favourites from Star Wars, The Lion King, Back to the Future and La La Land to name just a few! As always, the concert is also full of fun film facts from CPO’s Conductor, Michael Bell MBE.

 A Night at the Proms – Friday 22 March 2019, 7.30pm

Then there’s the stunning grandeur of A Night at the Proms (Friday 22 March 2019) with a rousing repertoire ranging from Eric Coates and Grace Williams to Arnold and Walton. Gareth Wood’s Cardiff Bay Overture raises the curtain before several great pieces associated with the prestigious Last Night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. The concert comes to an epic finale with the patriotic fervour of Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance

Beethoven & Shostakovich: The Power of Music
Saturday 29 June 2019, 7.30pm

CPO’s spectacular season closes in style with Beethoven & Shostakovich: The Power of Music (Saturday 29 June 2019) and two ‘Famous Fives’. Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 5 ‘Emperor’ is a magisterial work featuring soloist Giuseppe Guarrera, whilst Shostakovich’s enigmatic Fifth Symphony is hard-hitting, haunting and highly dramatic.
