City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra
International Concert Series 2018-19
Tuesday 23 October, 7.30pm
Concert No 2
(in subscription package)
|Soloist||Louis Schwizgebel, Piano|
|Wagner||Overture, The Flying Dutchman||11'|
|Mozart||Piano Concerto No 21||29'|
|Sibelius||Symphony No 1||38'|
Premiered to great acclaim in 1899, the opening paragraph of Sibelius’s First Symphony is like no other in its evocative clarinet solo over a sustained drum roll. Elsewhere; primal forces, a heady romance and storm-tossed climaxes build to create a magnificent edifice. By contrast, Mozart’s sublime work opens with “a tiptoed march in stockinged feet”, its conspiratorial air yielding to child-like naivety and one of the most ebullient movements in the concerto repertoire.
ICS: PRE-CONCERT TALK: Jonathan James illustrates and discusses the programme.
