IF YOU fancy a break from all the hot weather, pop into St David’s Hall where there’s loads of cool new shows on offer!
As ever, the National Concert Hall of Wales is the place to be for cracking comedy. Genial Geordie Ross Noble (Weds 3 Oct) with his mysterious alter ego El Hablador, whilst 8 Out of 10 Cats regular David O’Doherty (Thurs 8 Nov) shares his surreal humour aided by his trusty keyboard. Iconic punk poet Dr John Cooper Clarke (Sun 2 Dec) delivers his scattergun satirical verse, and if you want some near-the-knuckle laughs there’s drag diva Trixie Mattel (Weds 20 Feb) and national treasure Julian Clary (Weds 27 March). Plus, if you want to secure your seats before they sell out, snap up your tickets now for Henning Wehn (Sat 6 April) and Stewart Francis (Fri 7 June)!
There’s the usual healthy helping of top quality classical music too. The prestigious International Concert Series 2018/19 starts in style with London Philharmonic Orchestra (Tues 16 Oct). Also beginning their new seasons are the BBC National Orchestra & Chorus of Wales (Thurs 4 Oct) and Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra (Fri 19 Oct) with powerful programmes both featuring Vaughan Williams. Elsewhere, there’s the Mozart Festival Orchestra decked in authentic 18th century costume performing The Four Seasons by Candelight (Sun 25 Nov).
Furthermore, there’s a trio of shows celebrating the screen and stage starting with a star-studded line-up for A Night at the Musicals (Mon 5 Nov), plus Zimmer vs Williams (Sun 18 Nov) and John Wilson & The John Wilson Orchestra (Tues 4 Dec) performing At the Movies. And if you’re looking for the perfect way to get into the festive spirit with a heart-warming family favourite, look no further than Love Actually:Film with Live Orchestra (Mon 3 Dec).
Talking of which, it may only be August but we’ve just announced our best Christmas ballets line-up ever from the Russian State Ballet & Orchestra of Siberia! This year’s season includes magical performances of the Snow Maiden, The Nutcracker, Swan Lake and Cinderella (Weds 19 – Mon 31 Dec) for the final fortnight of 2018.
There’s some big hitters in the worlds of rock and pop too. Indie heroes Echo & The Bunnymen (Mon 15 Oct) perform their most beloved songs with stunning strings on The Stars, The Ocean &The Moon tour, whilst the legendary Van Morrison (Fri 12 Oct) celebrates 50 years of Astral Weeks.
Elsewhere, there’s soul superstars The Drifters (Thurs 13 Sept) and Dionne Warwick (Weds 19 Sept), prog-rockers King Crimson (Weds 31 Oct), revered singer-songwriter Joan Armatrading (Weds 17 Oct), Scottish siblings The Proclaimers (Weds 10 Oct) and R&B icons Boney M (Sat 1 Dec). Plus, there’s limited seats left for the likes of Europe (Fri 21 Sept) and Gary Numan (Mon 12 Nov).
If you’re after something a bit different, there’s a multitude of fascinating one-man shows from all walks of life including Simon Reeve (Thurs 20 Sept), Neil Oliver (Thurs 18 Oct), James Martin (Mon 22 Oct) and Levison Wood (Mon 2 Nov). And if you’re a fan of the smash-hit Netflix series, you’ll love One Man Stranger Things (Sat 29 Sept)!
Lastly, if you’re looking for the perfect half-term holiday fun for your tiny tots then there’s three performances of Little Baby Bum (Mon 29 – Tues 30 Oct) where they can see their favourite characters including Mia, Jacus, Twinkle, Cow and Black Sheep live onstage!
