Arts Active is inviting 10 children between the ages of 4 and 7 to actively take part in a specifically devised Gamelan course: Gamelan Gang. Working together and individually in an hour long workshop each week the children will explore music through the use of Gamelan. Learning not only how to respond to new sounds musically but as a group they will be encouraged to be as creative as they like with no chance for anything they create to be classed as wrong. Gamelan Gang will help to develop their listening skills, flexibility and group music making skills. This also helps their parents or carers to encourage the children's creativity and musicality at the same time as being able to bond with them through their own participation in the classes.
Gamelan is typically from the islands of Java and Bali being made up of an ensemble of traditional instruments from Indonesia. The word "Gamelan" comes from the Javanese word "gamels", meaning to strike or hammer. The gamelan is made up of a variety of different instruments featuring some similar to metallophones and xylophones, with drums, gongs, vocalists and more.
Gamelan Gang will give your children a chance to experience music of another culture and allow them to experience learning music in a unique way. Gamelan provides the chance to educate children in a relaxed and enjoyable environment with no experience needed to take part. Gamelan Gang will be led by experienced Gamelan tutors who also have a wide experience of working with young children. This will help to deliver a course created and moulded especially for those children who attend.
Gamelan Gang will run over 12 weeks with gentle weekly introductions which will introduce traditional elements of Javanese Gamelan combined with traditional, well known fairy tales to create a child friendly approach to learning music and Gamelan. With structured weekly classes and wonderful creative opportunities the children will be able to explore music through this Indonesian medium of music which will be a new and exciting outlook for them to discover.
With Gamelan the possibilities are endless!
The team behind the popular education, community and audience engagement programme at St David's Hall and our sister venue the New Theatre.
Taking inspiration from the diverse programmes of St David’s Hall & the New Theatre and using them as a powerful catalyst for creative endeavours, we aim to encourage people, from the youngest to oldest, to engage in and enjoy arts activity.
You'll still see the same great arts projects that made up the St David's Hall Access All Areas programme but there will be more initiatives that work across both St David's Hall and the New Theatre, making the most of Cardiff's premier city centre venues.
For further information about the A2: Arts Active programme and current projects, events and initiatives, contact David Baxter on 029 2087 8571.
There are no forthcoming events for this season.
Please check back again or join our mailing list to keep up to date with events at St David's Hall.
A2: Arts Active is supported by the Arts Active Trust.
